Along the Lake Michigan shoreline north of Chicago lies the area known as the North Shore. The communities along this corridor contain some of the most exclusively and stately homes in the entire Chicagoland area. Developed largely as a bedroom community for industrial and financial scions going back to the late 1800's, this area is rich in history and character.
However, not all of the housing is exclusive or expensive. A few of the communities have a variety of affordable housing alternatives in their small but attractive business districts. Two examples are the Villages of Wilmette and Winnetka. Both of these communities have well-defined central business districts. For the most part, vintage apartment buildings are situated within the business districts of these two communities. Developed years ago as starter housing for young professionals or service employees of many of near-by estates, these buildings today offer affordable living along the North Shore. The apartments are conveniently located to take advantage of the shopping districts in the communities and the proximity to commuter rail lines.
